In 2010, he transferred to Findlay College Prep in Henderson, Nevada for his senior year. Findlay does not have a baseball team.

His father urged him to give baseball another chance, so he held a training session for MLB scouts, during which he threw a fastball that hit 96 mph (154 km/h).

After becoming eligible, Garrett was selected in the 22nd round of the 2011 MLB draft. He joined the Reds in exchange for a $1 million signing bonus and the chance to continue his basketball career.

Garrett began his basketball career in the fall of 2011 at Bridgton Academy in Bridgton, Maine, where he played for the 2011–12 season before enrolling at St. John’s University.

Garrett came into college as a four-star basketball recruit, ranked 68th in the country and 21st among small forwards.
