Andrew McCutchen began playing baseball for Fort Meade High School while he was in eighth grade.



He batted .474,.709, with 16 home runs and 42 RBIs in his senior season. He also played football and ran track in addition to baseball.

He signed a letter of intent to play football for the University of Florida at the same time as the Pittsburgh Pirates selected him as the 11th overall pick in the 2005 MLB Draft.

During the 2006 South Atlantic League All-Star team, McCutchen was named to the starting lineup.

He was selected Minor League Player of the Year the following year. In 2009, McCutchen was promoted to the major leagues.

He won the Silver Slugger award three times and the Gold Glove medal in 2012. He was named National League MVP for the 2013 season.

McCutchen also competed in track and field and football. In his freshman year of high school, he was a member of a state champion 4 x 100-meter relay team.

McCutchen was a prominent football recruit in Florida, playing wide receiver in high school, but decided to pursue a baseball career instead.

He was reportedly offered a full-ride scholarship to play football at the University of Miami.
