In 2016, Zerpa signed as an international free agent with the Kansas City Royals, receiving a $100,000 signing bonus.

In 2017, Zerpa debuted professionally with the Dominican Summer League Royals, finishing 3–4 with a 1.84 ERA and 39 strikeouts in 63+23 innings.

He pitched for the Arizona League Royals in season, going 3–6 with a 3.88 ERA and 34 strikeouts in 48+23 innings.

Zerpa pitched for the Burlington Royals and the Idaho Falls Chukars in 2019, going 6–3 with a 3.40 ERA and 55 strikeouts in 55+13 innings.

Because the Minor League Baseball season was canceled due to the COVID-19 outbreak, he did not play in 2020.

Zerpa joined the Royals’ 40-man roster on November 20, 2020.

Zerpa pitched for the Quad Cities River Bandits, Northwest Arkansas Naturals, and Omaha Storm Chasers in 2021, going 4–4 with a 4.58 ERA and 108 strikeouts in 88+3 innings.

Zerpa was called up to the active roster on September 30, 2021, and he made his Major League Baseball debut against the Cleveland Indians.

The Royals’ pitching rotation has been hampered by injuries recently, and Zerpa’s debut coincides with that. Mike Minor has left shoulder impingement syndrome and is on the injured list.

Brad Keller last threw last month and is currently on the 60-day disabled list after suffering a right lateral strain. Brady Singer, meanwhile, was withdrawn from his Tuesday night start after only two-thirds of an inning due to right arm soreness.

Despite the fact that Tyler Zuber was brought up to replace Singer on the roster, he is a reliever, so Zerpa will get the start tonight. Last November, Zerpa was transferred to the 40-man roster to avoid being drafted in the Rule 5 Draft.
