On December 13th, the agreement was finalized. Albert Pujols’ 2012 free-agent contract was the previous record holder for the Angels’ highest free-agent deal.
Due to the Coronavirus epidemic that reduced the season to 60 games in 2020, he was only able to play 52 games, yet he still managed to put up an OPS+ of 150.
With nine home runs and 31 RBIs, he had a batting average of 286. The Angels never had much of a chance of making the playoffs, thus his performance went unnoticed.
The ailments that limited his time on the field in 2021 were similar to those that limited his playing time in the previous year (58 games).
However, when he did play, he did so with an OPS+ of only 94 despite a season in which the Angels were once again far from contending thanks to two-way star Shohei Ohtani’s MVP-winning performance.
He was back healthy and so was Mike Trout, who had missed most of the previous season due to injuries. Things were different in 2022.
Even though he was batting just above.200 during the first five weeks, the Angels got off to a good start this year.
On May 10th, after rookie Reid Detmers threw a no-hitter against the Tampa Bay Rays, he managed to hit a home run from the left side, despite not generally being a switch-hitter.
The Rays moved OF Brett Phillips to the mound in a mop-up role in the bottom of the eighth inning, having already used five pitchers on the night.
Despite the fact that Trout and Ohtani already had two runs on the board after a two-run home run off of Phillips, and that Rendon chose to face the tyrant from the wrong side, he was able to drive one of Phillips’ pitches deep into left field to put the game away at 12-0.
