In the month of December, the agreement was finalized and made public. For the Angels, it was the richest free agency contract ever, surpassing Albert Pujols’ 2012 contract.

While playing just 52 games in 2020 due to the Coronavirus pandemic that cut the season short to 60, he still managed to put up an OPS+ of 150 by hitting .220.

The hitter had a batting average of 286 with nine homers and 31 RBIs. Due to the Angels’ lack of postseason competitiveness, his performance was overlooked.

While he participated in less than 60 games for the second consecutive year in 2021 (just 58), it was due to ailments that limited his playing time.

If you count his six home runs and 34 RBI for an OPS+ of 94, you can see that even with the heroics of two-way star Shohei Ohtani (the MVP Award), the Angels were once again well out of contention despite his underwhelming performance on the field.

But things were different in 2022, when he and Mike Trout, who had both been injured for the bulk of the previous season, returned healthy.

When the Angels began their season, they were off to a good start, even if they were batting only slightly above.200.

On May 10th, a rookie Reid Detmers threw a no-hitter against the Tampa Bay Rays and he managed to hit a home run from the left side, despite not generally being a switch-hitter like that.

Having already used five pitchers on the night, the Rays chose to employ OF Brett Phillips in a mop-up duty in the bottom of the eighth inning.

It was 12-0 when Rendon entered the game, after Trout and Ohtani each blasted two-run home runs off Phillips.

Rendon chose to face the usurper from the opposite side, but he still managed to drive one of Phillips’ pitches out of the yard, ensuring a quick finish to the game.
