In April 2008, Rizzo was diagnosed with limited stage classical Hodgkin lymphoma. He underwent chemotherapy for six months.
At the same time, his grandma was battling breast cancer. Rizzo’s doctor told him he was in remission on September 2, 2008, however, he still had six weeks of treatment and some follow-up testing. Rizzo’s doctor advised him on November 18 that he “could live a regular life.”
On June 1, 2017, Rizzo proposed to Emily Vakos. They met during the Cubs’ 2016 spring training in Arizona. On December 29, 2018, the pair married, with teammate Kris Bryant serving as one of the groomsmen.
In the year 2020, he and his wife adopted a dog named Kevin. They live in the Florida city of Fort Lauderdale. They also lived in a Chicago apartment for seven years before leaving in 2021 after Rizzo was traded.
