Austin Hedges, born Austin Charles Hedges is an American born professional baseball catcher currently with the Cleveland Indians baseball team. Austin was born to parents Pam Hedges and Charlie Hedges on August 18, 1992, in San Juan Capistrano, California.
Austin attended Serra Catholic High School in San Juan Capistrano. In 2011 he was drafted out of high school by the San Diego Padres in the 2nd round of the 2011 MLB raft. He decided not to attend college and signed with the Padres. After signing with the Padres, he was given $3 million as a signing bonus.
Whiles with the Padres, Austin was ranked as the Padre’s fifth-best prospect by Baseball America and also the fourth-best catching prospect in the minor leagues by MLB.com. Austin played for the Fort Wayne TinCaps of the Midwest League during the 2012 minor league season.
The Padres assigned him to play with the Class-A Advanced Lake Elsinore Storm in the 2013 season. The Padres promoted him to the Double-A San Antonio Missions in August that year. Austin made his MLB debut for the Padres on May 4 2015 and in August 2020, the Cleveland Indians purchased his contract from the Padres.
