In the ninth round of the 2013 Major League Baseball Draft, Ricky Pruitt was selected by the Tampa Bay Rays to join their organization.

He was a member of the Montgomery Biscuits in 2015 and then moved on to play for the Durham Bulls in 2016. After the conclusion of the 2016 campaign, the Rays included Pruitt on their 40-man roster.
In January of 2020, the Tampa Bay Rays made the transaction that sent Pruitt to the Houston Astros. After suffering a microfracture in his right elbow in 2020, Pruitt did not play a single game for the Astros and did not contribute in any way.
After having surgery on his right elbow on April 10, 2021, Pruitt was required to take a break from baseball for the next sixty days.
The Miami Marlins exercised their option to purchase Pruitt’s contract on August 20. Pruitt had a 1.93 earned-run average (ERA) and 4 strikeouts throughout his 4 appearances for the Marlins.
