Sulser, the brother of Miami Marlins reliever Cole Sulser, is making his major league debut. In three starts with Indianapolis, Beau Sulser, who turns 28 on May 5, was 1-2 with a 2.13 ERA.

Before the Pirates’ rain-delayed 4-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs, manager Derek Shelton observed, “He can throw in many roles.” “If we have to, he can start.”

He’s capable of pitching in a hybrid capacity. He can pitch at varied lengths, which offers us more versatility.”

Anthony Alford was designated for assignment to make room on Pittsburgh’s 40- and 28-man rosters. After missing 10 days due to a right wrist strain, Alford was activated from the injured list on Friday.

The move reduces Pittsburgh’s active roster to three outfielders, but Diego Castillo and Cole Tucker can both play in the outfield. Castillo made his debut against the Cubs in the series finale.

When Triple-A Indianapolis manager Miguel Perez convened a team meeting before Sulser’s scheduled start against Columbus on Saturday, he found out he was being promoted to the majors.

“We assumed it was going to be about something else before the game, and then he let me know there,” Sulser, a Dartmouth alumnus who was drafted in the 10th round of the 2017 amateur draft, said.

After receiving the news, Sulser claimed he immediately called his fiancée and immediate relatives. His brother was busy prepping for his game against Miami, but the two finally spoke on Sunday.
