He debuted in the Major League Baseball (MLB) in 2016 with the Tampa Bay Rays and won the American League (AL) Cy Young Award in 2018 when he was an All-Star and led the league in both wins and earned run average (ERA).

Snell was drafted in the first round of the 2011 Major League Baseball draft by the Tampa Bay Rays.

He signed with the Rays and debuted with the Gulf Coast Rays, where he went 2–2 with a 3.08 ERA in 11 games (eight starts).

He pitched for the Princeton Rays in 2012, going 5–1 with a 2.09 ERA in 11 starts, and the Bowling Green Hot Rods in 2013, when he went 4–9 with a 4.27 ERA in 23 starts.

The Rays traded Snell to the San Diego Padres on December 29, 2020, in exchange for prospects Luis Patino, Blake Hunt, and Cole Wilcox, as well as catcher Francisco Meja.

Snell was sent to the Padres as the team’s number two pitcher. In 2021, Snell deteriorated slightly, finishing with a 7-6 record and a 4.20 ERA in 27 starts.

Due to a case of food poisoning, Snell missed two starts in the summer.

Due to left adductor discomfort, he had to leave his September 12 start early. The next day, he was placed in the IL, and he would never return.
