At Chaska High School, he was a three-sport varsity athlete who earned awards in American football, ice hockey, and baseball.

Hand ended his senior baseball season with an 8–2 record, two saves, and a 0.61 earned-run average (ERA) in 68 innings thrown, allowing only six earned runs.

Hand struck out 14 hitters in a complete game, three-hit shutout against Eden Prairie High School in a 3–0 victory. Hand hit.352 with eight home runs and 24 runs batted in at the plate (RBI).
