On May 16, 2017, the Indians promoted Zimmer to the major leagues. On that day, he made his MLB debut. On May 17, Zimmer hit his first MLB hit and home run in his second MLB game.

Zimmer hit his first grand slam against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on July 25, a game that the Indians won 11–7. Zimmer batted .241 in 299 at-bats with Cleveland, with eight home runs and 39 RBIs.

Zimmer started the season as the Indians’ starting center fielder. He was optioned to Triple-A Columbus after batting .226 with a 42 percent strikeout rate in early June.



Zimmer injured his right shoulder after only eight games with Columbus. In late June, he received an anti-inflammatory shot and was forced to rest for four to six weeks.

Zimmer missed the rest of the year after undergoing right shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum on July 21, 2018. It took 8–12 months to recover. Zimmer only appeared in 13 at-bats in 2019.

 

Zimmer batted.162 with one home run and three RBIs in 20 games with the Cleveland Indians in 2020.

The Cleveland Indians recalled Zimmer from the Columbus Clippers on May 27, 2021.

In 299 at-bats in 2021, he batted .227 with eight home runs. Zimmer hit a single home run against his older brother Kyle Zimmer in an 8-3 win over Kansas City on September 27, 2021.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, there have only been three other instances in MLB history since 1900 where a brother homered off another brother.

Zimmer was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays for Anthony Castro on April 7, 2022. On April 10th, he was activated.
