Nimmo was born in Cheyenne, Wyoming, to Ron Nimmo, a certified public accountant from La Junta, Colorado, and Patti Nimmo.

He has a sister, Kristen, and a brother, Bryce, who played collegiate baseball at the University of Nebraska. As a kid, he aspired to be a bull rider. He grew up rooting for the Colorado Rockies.



Cheyenne East High School was Nimmo’s alma mater. Nimmo played American Legion Baseball since Wyoming is one of just three states that does not provide high school baseball.

In 70 games for his team, Post 6, he batted.448 with 15 home runs and 34 stolen bases.

Nimmo’s Legion games and other activities were scouted by the Mets.

Nimmo earned co-MVP honors with pitcher Nick Burdi at 2010 Under Armour All-America Baseball Game at Wrigley Field, where he went 2-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored, and two runs batted in.

Nimmo was ranked 35th among the Top 50 prospects for the 2011 draft by Baseball America. Nimmo became the highest-drafted Wyomingite in Major League Baseball history when the Mets picked him with the 13th overall choice in 2011.

The previous top choice from Wyoming high schools was pitcher Michael Beaver, who was taken in the sixth round (109th overall) of the 1966 Major League Baseball draft by the Philadelphia Phillies.

At the age of 18, Nimmo received a $2.1 million contract. He had a verbal promise to attend the University of Arkansas if left unsigned.
