Nimmo was born in Cheyenne, Wyoming, to Ron and Patti Nimmo, both qualified public accountants from La Junta, Colorado.



He has a sister, Kristen, and a brother, Bryce, who played collegiate baseball at Nebraska. As a boy, he dreamed of being a bull rider. He was a die-hard Colorado Rockies fan growing up.

Cheyenne East High School in Cheyenne was Nimmo’s alma mater. Nimmo played American Legion Baseball since Wyoming is one of just three states without high school baseball.

In 70 games for his Post 6 team in 2010, he batted.448 with 15 home runs and 34 steals.

Nimmo’s Legion games and other activities were scouted by the Mets. Nimmo went 2-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored, and two runs batted in to earn co-MVP honors with pitcher Nick Burdi at 2010 Under Armour All-America Baseball Game at Wrigley Field.

Nimmo was regarded as the 35th best prospect in Baseball America’s Top 50 prospects for the 2011 draft. Nimmo became the highest-drafted Wyomingite in Major League Baseball history when he was picked with the 13th overall pick by the Mets in 2011.

Pitcher Michael Beaver, picked by the Philadelphia Phillies in the sixth round (109th overall) of the 1966 Major League Baseball draft, was the previous highest choice among the 13 players selected from Wyoming high schools.

At the age of 18, Nimmo signed a deal for $2.1 million. He had a verbal agreement to attend the University of Arkansas if his application was left unsigned.
