Nimmo was ranked 35th among the top 50 prospects for the 2011 draft by Baseball America. Nimmo became the highest-drafted Wyomingite in MLB history when the Mets selected him with the 13th overall pick in 2011.

The previous highest pick from Wyoming high schools was pitcher Michael Beaver, who was selected in the sixth round (109th overall) of the 1966 Major League Baseball draft by the Philadelphia Phillies.
