With the Milwaukee Brewers, Brandon Woodruff made his major league debut with a record of 2-3, 4.81 in eight appearances.
In 19 games, including four starts, he was 3-0 with a 3.61 ERA. Throughout the season, he was up and down between the majors and the minors, but he was outstanding after getting brought up in September and posting an ERA of 0.73.
In a bullpen game against the Colorado Rockies on October 4th, manager Craig Counsell tasked him with starting the first game of the NLDS.
He threw three scoreless innings to help the Brewers to a 3-2 victory over the Cardinals. In-Game 1 of the National League Championship Series, he faced the Los Angeles Dodgers.
In the top of the third inning, he replaced Gio Gonzalez and pitched a 1-2-3 inning before leading off the bottom of the inning with a home run against Clayton Kershaw, igniting the Miller Park crowd and the rest of the Red Sox.
To put things in perspective, the ball was slammed into center field and sailed over an open field. After the Brewers scored one more run to go up 2-1, he went on to retire the side in order in the fourth inning.
Milwaukee’s 6-5 victory was credited to him, and it was a just reward for his great two-way performance.
Prior to this season, Woodruff had a home run in his first game following the burial of his brother Blake, who had been killed while riding an ATV, and he had one in AA in 2016, his first game after attending Blake’s funeral.
All the way through college at Mississippi State University, he was a two-way player who showed no signs of losing his ability to hit for power.
