Having joined the NFL as an undrafted free agent this year, Schooler has only participated in the Patriots’ rookie developmental program and offseason workouts, and mandatory minicamp.

After six years in college, he has quite a football resume. Splitting time between Oregon and Texas (with a brief offseason at Arizona), he played in a total of 61 games at both safety and wide receiver.

He played with the Ducks for his first four years of college, totaling 40 games. He started out as a defensive back for the squad, but he switched positions before his sophomore year and ended up catching 43 passes for 521 yards and four touchdowns over his three years there.

He left for Arizona in the fall of 2019 but returned to Texas as a Longhorn in the summer of 2020. Schooler switched back to defense as a super senior after a successful offensive career in which he caught 12 passes for 140 yards and scored twice.

After not being selected in the 2022 NFL draft, Schooler signed a conventional three-year free agent agreement with the Patriots.

This year, his salary and signing bonus proration add up to $710,000, bringing his total compensation to $715,000. Under the Top-51 rule, only the guaranteed signing bonus is now counted against New England’s cap.

If he makes the team in September, his salary would be added to the pot. Otherwise, he’d have to pay a dead cap penalty of $15,000.
