Axel Edward Brian Hoyer, a quarterback with the New England Patriots of the National Football League, was born on October 13, 1985.
In college, he played football for Michigan State. He has started for eight different clubs since entering the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2009, which is the second-highest total in league history.
Hoyer has also played as a backup quarterback for the Patriots for six different nonconsecutive seasons and was a member of the squad that won Super Bowl LIII.
Hoyer was not chosen in the 2009 NFL Draft despite being invited to the NFL Scouting Combine. He joined the New England Patriots right away after the draft.
Ben Roethlisberger, the starting quarterback, and backup Byron Leftwich both suffered injuries within a week of one another in November 2012, prompting Hoyer to sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
In Weeks 12 and 13 against the Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens, respectively, Hoyer acted as Charlie Batch’s backup. On December 8, 2012, the team let him go. The Steelers are Hoyer’s lone team that has not started him as of 2020.
On December 10, the Arizona Cardinals claimed Hoyer off waivers. In Week 16’s game against the Chicago Bears, he took Ryan Lindley’s place and completed 11 of 19 passes for 105 yards and an interception.
Hoyer became the fourth quarterback to start for the Cardinals that season when head coach Ken Whisenhunt declared on December 26 that he would start the season finale vs the San Francisco 49ers. He completed 19 of his final 34 passes for 225 passing yards, a touchdown, and an interception in the 27-13 loss. Hoyer was released by the Cardinals on May 12, 2013.
The Cleveland Browns signed Hoyer to a two-year contract on May 16. The Browns started Hoyer over backup Jason Campbell for the Week 3 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings on September 18 to replace the injured starter, Brandon Weeden. Weeden had suffered a thumb injury.
Hoyer and the Patriots agreed to a two-year contract extension on March 14, 2022.
