Born on October 13, 1985, Axel Edward Brian Hoyer plays quarterback for the New England Patriots in the National Football League.
At Michigan State, he played college football. He became an undrafted free agent in the NFL in 2009, and since then, he has started for eight different clubs, which is second in league history.
Along with being a backup quarterback for the Patriots for six seasons that weren’t consecutive, Hoyer was a member of the group that won Super Bowl LIII.
Despite being granted access to the NFL Scouting Combine, Hoyer was not picked in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft. After the Draft, he signed with the New England Patriots right away.
After starter Ben Roethlisberger and backup Byron Leftwich both suffered injuries within a week of one another, Hoyer signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers on November 20, 2012.
In Weeks 12 and 13, when the Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens were in town, Hoyer backed up Charlie Batch. On December 8, 2012, the group released him. Hoyer’s lone team that did not start him as of 2020 was the Steelers.
The Arizona Cardinals took Hoyer off waivers on December 10. Against the Chicago Bears in Week 16, he took Ryan Lindley’s place and completed 11 of his 19 attempts for 105 yards and an interception.
Hoyer became the team’s fourth starting quarterback on December 26 after Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt confirmed that he would start the season finale against the San Francisco 49ers. In the 27-13 defeat, he completed 19 of his 34 passes for 225 passing yards, a touchdown, and an interception. The Cardinals dismissed Hoyer on May 12, 2013.
Hoyer was given a two-year contract by the Cleveland Browns on May 16. The Browns started Hoyer over backup Jason Campbell on September 18 to replace injured starter Brandon Weeden for the Week 3 matchup with the Minnesota Vikings. Weeden had suffered a thumb injury.
Hoyer extended his two-year contract with the Patriots on March 14, 2022.
