He was offered the chance to play collegiate football at San Diego State but declined offers from Oregon State, Wyoming, and Navy.

While a student there, he played football for the San Diego State Aztecs. He redshirted his true freshman year but was named first-team All-Mountain West Conference and second-team freshman All-American by The Athletic after recording 49 stops, nine tackles for a loss, and 5.5 sacks. In the COVID-19-shortened 2020 campaign for SDSU, he recorded four sacks, 9.5 tackles for loss, and was once again named to the first team of the Mountain West.

As a redshirt junior, he was once again named to the first team All-Mountain West and was honored as the division’s defensive player of the year. In addition, he received second-team All-American honors from the Sporting News, Walter Camp Foundation, Football Writers Association of America, and Associated Press. The Arizona Cardinals selected Thomas in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft.
