Outfielder Canaan Smith-Njigba was one of the four prospects protected by the Pittsburgh Pirates.



Smith-Njigba, a left-handed hitter, was acquired by the Pirates in the Jameson Taillon deal last summer. He is also the older brother of Jaxon Smith-Njigba, a great Ohio State wide receiver and Rose Bowl player.

The majority of Smith-2021 Njigba’s season was spent with the Double-A Altoona Curve. Smith-Njigba had a.274/.398/.406 slash line with Altoona, with a 127 wRC+.

He appeared in 266 plate appearances for the Curve in 66 games, walked 16.9% of the time, and struck out 24.8 percent of the time.

Smith-biggest Njigba’s attribute at Altoona was his ability to get on base. A walk rate of 16.9% is significantly higher than the national average.

Smith-Njigba was sent to Triple-A Indianapolis at the end of the season. Smith-Njigba had a.095/.174/.095 slash line with the Indians, along with a -24 wRC+, despite only having 23 PAs in 7 games.

Smith-Njigba, on the other hand, rebounded back with a good performance in the Arizona Fall League, where he hit.452 with a.908 OPS in 73 PAs.
