Keenum received his high school football education at Wylie High School in Abilene, Texas.

Throughout his time playing high school football for the Bulldogs, he threw for 6,783 yards and 48 touchdowns, while he ran for 41 touchdowns and 2,000 yards.

Keenum was the starting quarterback 42 times during his career and finished with a record of 31–11 overall.

In the Texas Class 3A Division I Championship in 2004, Keenum led Wylie on the game-winning drive, which resulted in a 17–14 victory over Cuero High School, which is located in Cuero, Texas.

During his time at high school, Keenum competed on the varsity basketball and track teams, earning letters in both sports.

Keenum was recruited by the University of Houston, as well as Baylor, North Texas, and UTEP; however, the University of Houston was the only school that offered him a scholarship. Baylor, North Texas, and UTEP also competed for his services.
