He participated in 16 games with 7 starts as a freshman in 2016, going 2–5 with a 3.52 ERA and 59 strikeouts. Following the 2016 season, he played collegiate summer baseball with the Cape Cod Baseball League’s Wareham Gatemen.

Mize pitched in 13 games with 12 starts as a sophomore in 2017, finishing 8–2 with a 2.04 ERA, 109 strikeouts, and only nine walks. After the season, he spent the summer with the United States collegiate national team.



Mize was promoted to the major leagues by the Tigers on August 19, 2020, and made his debut that night against the Chicago White Sox. In his debut start, Mize pitched 73 pitches over 4+13 innings, giving three earned runs while striking out seven and walking none in a no-decision.

Mize pitched a no-hitter into the sixth inning against the Chicago White Sox on September 11, but a double by Yolmer Sánchez wrecked the no-hitter attempt. Mize participated in seven games for the 2020 Detroit Tigers, posting a 0–3 record with a 6.99 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 28+13 innings thrown.
