Sal Agostinelli and Jesus Mendez were Hernandez’s scouts when he joined Philadelphia in July 2006, less than two months after his 16th birthday.

In 2007, he made his professional debut with the VSL Phillies. In 54 games that year, he hit.276/.328/.436 while fielding.920 at SS (his main position).

With eight triples, he led the Venezuelan Summer League. In 60 games with the same squad in 2008, Hernandez hit.315/.412/.426 with 19 stolen bases in 26 tries and fielded .971 at second base.

He was among the VSL leaders in average (6th), on-base percentage (5th), slugging (10th), on-base percentage (4th), thefts (4th), and triples (4th) (6, tied for 1st).

In his first season in the Venezuelan Winter League, he went 0 for 2 for the Bravos de Margarita.


In 41 games with the GCL Phillies in 2009, he hit.267/.351/.313 with 13 stolen bases.

In 65 games for the Williamsport Crosscutters in 2010, Hernandez hit .325/.390/.392 with 32 stolen bases (caught 6 times).

He was voted his team’s MVP and led the New York-Penn League in hits (83, 4th), average (5th), steals (2nd), putouts at second base (135), assists at second base (179), double plays at second base (40), and fielding percentage at second base (.978).

Between Nick Longmire and Colton Cain, he was rated as the NYPL’s #9 prospect by Baseball America.

He went 10 for 39 with four walks for Margarita. Cesar hit.268/.306/.333 in 33 tries with the Clearwater Threshers in 2011.

With a .975 fielding percentage, he was the greatest defensive second baseman in the Florida State League, according to Baseball America.

He batted .259/.314/.277 as a regular for the Bravos in 2011-2012, with only Collin Cowgill having a lower slugging percentage among their players with 100+ at-bats.
