In 2009, he moved up a level, joining the Gulf Coast League (GCL) Phillies, where he played mainly second base and hit .267/.351/.313 in 41 games, tying for seventh in the league with 13 stolen bases.

During the 2009 season, he also played in the Florida Instructional League.

 

Hernandez’s progress earned him another promotion in 2010, when he was assigned to the Williamsport Crosscutters of the New York–Penn League (NY-Penn), where he was a big hit.

He was awarded a Mid-Season All-Star for the New York-Penn League, and his teammates voted him their Most Valuable Player (MVP).

He hit .325 (5th in the league)/.390/.392, including.391 versus left-handed pitchers, and stole 32 bases in 2010. (2nd in the league).

After the season, he joined the Bravos de Margarita of the Venezuelan Winter League, the first of numerous seasons in which he would return home and continue to play baseball.

Baseball America listed Hernández as the Phillies’ 14th-best prospect heading into the 2011 season.

Hernández was a “forgotten” talent with upper-echelon speed, according to John Sickels, a minor league baseball analyst for SBNation.com, entering the 2011 season.

In 2011, he hit .268/.306/.333 with the Clearwater Threshers, the Phillies’ Class A-Advanced organization, with four home runs and 37 runs batted in (RBIs).

It was his first season in which he appeared in over 100 games, with 119 of them coming at second base.
