Baseball America named him the league’s best defensive second baseman despite the fact that he merely led the EL in miscues.

In the winter, he hit .266/.345/.357 with the Bravos. He stole 14 bases in 18 attempts, one behind leader Gorkys Hernandez, and was tied for second in triples with three.

When Michael Young was placed on the bereavement list, Hernandez got his first taste of the majors.

With a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning on May 29, 2013, he pinch-hit for Antonio Bastardo. He flew out to Jacoby Ellsbury to face Andrew Miller of the Boston Red Sox.

After a double switch, he stayed in at second base, replacing Kevin Frandsen. That day, he had one more at-bat, grounded out against Koji Uehara.

In 34 games that season, he hit.289, and in 66 games in 2014, he hit .237.
