He split time in 2012 between the Reading Phillies and the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, the Phillies’ Double-A (AA) and Triple-A (AAA) organizations.
With Reading, he tied for the league lead with 11 triples and was second in the league with 10 sacrifice hits. He hit .291/.329/.404 with two home runs and 57 RBIs while also stealing 21 bases.
His performance with Reading earned him a call-up to Lehigh Valley in August after he was named an Eastern League mid-season and post-season All Star.
After the 2012 season, Baseball America voted him the Phillies’ finest defensive infielder, while MiLB.com named him a Philadelphia Organization All Star.
Hernández entered the 2013 season in AAA, but when Michael Young was placed on bereavement leave in May, Hernández was promoted to the main leagues to take Young’s place on the roster.
He made his debut on May 29 as a pinch hitter for Antonio Bastardo. Shortly after, he was optioned to the AAA Lehigh Valley IronPigs, where he batted .309 (3rd in the league)/.375/.402, led the league in triples (9) and was 4th in stolen bases (32).
On July 7, he was named International League Batter of the Week.

“He’s done extremely well offensively,” his manager, Dave Brundage, said, “and now they’re trying to see if we can create a position or find a spot and see if it’s a fit or not.”
He was designated a Philadelphia Organization All Star by MiLB.com. Hernández appeared in 34 games with the big league club, batting .289/.344/.331 and driving in 10 runs.
