The Cleveland Indians selected Archer in the fifth round of the 2006 MLB Draft.

Following his signing, he was assigned to the Gulf Coast Indians Rookies. Additionally, he made one appearance on the mound with the Appalachian League’s Burlington Indians.

To begin the 2007 season, Archer stayed with the Gulf Coast Indians. For the Class A South Atlantic League’s Lake County Captains in 2008, Archer started 27 games and had a 4-8 win-loss record.
