His father, a fervent Dallas Cowboys supporter, gave him the team’s name. Dallas Clayton Goedert plays tight end for the Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League in American football (NFL).

The Eagles selected him in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft after he played college football for South Dakota State.

Goedert enrolled as a walk-on at South Dakota State University and played for the Jackrabbits from 2013 to 2017 (he redshirted as a freshman). Throughout his time there, he recorded 198 receptions for 2,988 yards and 21 touchdowns, including two consecutive seasons with 1,000 receiving yards.

He had a total of 72 receptions for 1,111 receiving yards and seven touchdowns during his senior season, starting all 14 games and serving as team captain. Goedert was a two-time first-team FCS All-American during his time at South Dakota State, and in 2016 he made the finals for the Walter Payton Award, given to the best FCS player.

Goedert was chosen by the Philadelphia Eagles in the second round (49th overall) of the 2018 NFL Draft. In order to take Goedert in the second round ahead of the Dallas Cowboys (50th overall), the Eagles had to trade their second-round pick (52nd overall) and fifth-round pick (169th overall) to the Indianapolis Colts.

Draft gurus predicted that the Dallas Cowboys will select Goedert because they were in need of a tight end after veterans Jason Witten and James Hanna retired. Brent Celek, who the Eagles released on March 13th, was replaced by Goedert, the third tight end taken in the 2018 draft.
