Castano went to Austin’s Lake Travis High School. Over the course of his last year of college, he appeared in 11 games, going 6-3 with a 1.03 ERA. In addition to being selected Team MVP, he was also recognized as District MVP.

Castano attended Baylor University after graduating from high school, where he played college baseball for the Baylor Bears for three years. When he was in high school, he was a member of the Cape Cod Baseball League’s Chatham Anglers.

In 14 Baylor starts in 2016, he had a 4.64 ERA and a 4-5 record as a junior. St. Louis Cardinals selected him in the 19th round of Major League Baseball’s draft following the 2015 season. He joined the St. Louis Cardinals organization and was assigned to the Johnson City Cardinals.

In his debut professional season, Castano tallied a 6.19 ERA and a 2-5 record in 12 games with Johnson City (11 starts). In 2017, he pitched for the State College Spikes in the New York-Penn League, where he compiled a 9-3 record with a 2.57 ERA in 14 appearances.
