He went to the Westwood Community School District for high school and played football there. At Western Michigan University, he spent four seasons playing collegiate football for the Western Michigan Broncos team.

As a rookie, he ran for an additional 37 yards on three attempts while catching 32 passes for 479 yards and three touchdowns.
