Shepherd completed his studies at Blue Springs High School in Blue Springs, Missouri. Despite being offered a position at Valparaiso, Shepherd chose to enroll at North Dakota State.

He caught 188 receptions for 2,841 yards and 20 touchdowns during his time playing for the Bison as an undergraduate.

Shepherd earned a bachelor’s degree in university studies with a minor in psychology from North Dakota State in May 2018. On May 6, 2019, Shepherd received a rookie camp invitation, and the Green Bay Packers subsequently signed him.

He entered the NFL on October 14, 2019, after receiving a 1-yard pass from Aaron Rodgers in Week 6’s victory over the Detroit Lions. On October 29, he was released and later re-signed to the practice squad.

On January 21, 2020, he and the Packers came to terms on a reserve/future deal. Shepherd and the Denver Broncos reached an agreement on the parameters of a deal on August 4, 2022.

On August 30, 2022, he was discharged, and the following day, he was added to the practice squad. On October 11th, he was released.
