Phelps was named to the New York Mets’ Opening Day roster in 2012, and he pitched in his first game on April 8th, retiring both batters he faced to end the game against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Over the next few months, he continued to pitch brilliantly, cementing his position as the Yankees’ swingman and long reliever.

He was dealt to the Miami Marlins on December 19, 2014, along with Martin Prado, for Nate Eovaldi, Garrett Jones, and Domingo German.

His 2015 season with the Marlins was a letdown, as he only went 4-8 with a 4.50 ERA in 23 games, including 19 starts.

He only pitched 112 innings, yet he had a 77/33 K/W ratio. On August 18th, he was diagnosed with a stress fracture in his right forearm, and his season was cut short.

Although the source of the injury was unknown, he had to depart his final start of the season on August 16th after only 2 1/3 innings due to discomfort.

He was mostly a reliever when he returned in 2016, earning only five starts in 64 appearances. In 86 2/3 innings, he finished 7-6 with a 2.28 ERA and 114 strikeouts. He also made four saves.
