Phelps signed a one-year, $1.75 million contract with the Toronto Blue Jays on February 11, 2021. Phelps was placed on the 60-day disabled list on May 15 due to a right lat strain.

After undergoing surgery to address a “severe” strain in his right lat on May 25, it was reported that Phelps will miss the rest of the season.

Phelps has a miniscule 0.87 ERA with 15 strikeouts in 11 appearances for Toronto in 2021. Phelps was invited to spring training after signing a minor league contract with the Blue Jays on November 29.

Phelps’ contract will be selected to the major league roster on April 1, 2022.

Phelps tosses four pitches to the batter. He throws a 90–92 mph four-seam fastball, 89–92 mph two-seam fastball, 86–88 mph cutter, and 82–85 mph changeup.

His primary pitch to left-handed hitters in the two-seamer, and his primary pitch to right-handed hitters is the four-seamer.

He only throws his changeup against lefties. In 2-strike counts against righties, he prefers to use his cutter.

Phelps is a fervent Catholic who often attends Mass at Midtown Manhattan’s St. Patrick’s Catholic Cathedral.

David Phelps has two kids with his wife. Their first kid, a daughter, was born in 2012, followed by another daughter in 2013, and his third daughter in 2015.
