In 2012, pitcher David Phelps made his major league debut with the New York Yankees.

 

Phelps went to Notre Dame after graduating from Hazelwood West High School, where as a sophomore, he struck out 102 hitters with a 1.88 ERA.

He was drafted in the 14th round of the 2008 amateur draft by the Yankees after going 5-5 with a 4.65 ERA and 75 strikeouts as a junior.

Scout Mike Gibbons signed him and he made his career debut for the Staten Island Yankees that summer, going 8-2 with a 2.72 ERA in 15 starts.

In 19 starts with the Charleston RiverDogs in 2009, he was 10-3 with a 2.80 ERA. In late July, he was promoted to the Tampa Yankees, where he went 3-1 in seven starts, allowing only five earned runs.

 

Phelps started 2010 with the AA Trenton Thunder, where he went 6-0 with a 2.04 ERA in 14 starts.

In early July, he was promoted to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees, where he went 4-2 with a 3.07 ERA in a dozen appearances.

He pitched for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre for the majority of 2011, posting a 6-6 record and 3.19 ERA in 18 starts.

He played in two games with the GCL Yankees on a rehabilitation assignment after missing two months of the season due to a shoulder ailment.
