New Jersey Generals made Johnson their first-round pick in the 2022 USFL Draft. Following Luis Perez, he was designated as the backup.

Johnson was frequently employed in different offensive sets in the USFL debut, as he carried for a game-high 98 yards and one score on 12 rushes while also completing 3 of 8 throws for 59 yards in a 24-28 loss to the Birmingham Stallions.
