Before beginning his career as a professional pitcher, Devin Smeltzer had already overcome childhood cancer and was a survivor of the disease.
At the age of 9, it was revealed that he had a malignant growth against his bladder the size of a grapefruit; nonetheless, he was able to receive treatment for it and beat the disease.
He was selected by the San Diego Padres in the 33rd round of the amateur draft in 2014 when he was still in high school, and then again by the Los Angeles Dodgers when he was still in junior college in 2016.
Both of these drafts were for baseball players. After signing on July 6th, he wasted no time getting his career started by joining the AZL Dodgers.
His first season as a reliever was not very successful, as he went 0-2 with an earned run average of 7.59 across 11 games.
However, he pitched significantly better in subsequent seasons.
After beginning the 2018 season in AA with the Tulsa Drillers of the Texas League, he finished 2017 with a combined record of 7-7 and a 4.17 earned run average in 26 games (25 starts) split between the Great Lakes Loons and the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes.
