Smeltzer was chosen by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the fifth round of the 2016 MLB Draft. Instead of moving to Texas Tech, he signed with the Dodgers and was given a $500,000 signing bonus.

After signing, he pitched 10.2 innings in relief for the Arizona Dodgers of the Arizona League’s Rookie Division, going 0-2 with a 7.59 ERA.

He started the 2017 campaign with the Class A Midwest League’s Great Lakes Loons.

He made 15 starts (plus one relief appearance) for the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes of the Class A-Advanced California League in 2017 in addition to his ten starts for Great Lakes.

Between the two teams, he had a 4.17 ERA and a 7-7 record. Smeltzer started the 2018 campaign with the Class AA Texas League’s Tulsa Drillers.

Smeltzer, Logan Forsythe, and Luke Raley were traded by the Dodgers to the Minnesota Twins on July 31, 2018, in exchange for Brian Dozier.

He spent the remainder of the season with the Chattanooga Lookouts of the Double-A Southern League. He was 5-5 with a 4.52 ERA in 33 games (14 starts) between Tulsa and Chattanooga.

With the Southern League’s Pensacola Blue Wahoos, he started the 2019 campaign, posting a 3-1 record and 0.60 ERA in 30 innings. On May 2, he was elevated to the Class AAA International League’s Rochester Red Wings.
