In May of 2014, he was named the National League Rookie of the Month.

The Cardinals declined Wong’s player option for the 2021 season in the summer of 2020, making him a free agent for the first time in his career.

After that, he joined the Milwaukee Brewers.

Kolten Wong is the son of Kolen “Kaha” Wong, who played collegiate baseball at USC and spent two years in the minor leagues with the Reno Silver Sox in Class-A.

Despite hitting .280 in 157 games, the elder Wong chose to raise his family in Hilo, Hawaii. He rose to popularity in Hawaii as a baseball coach.

Rather than pursuing a stable career, he took whatever employment would allow him to spend the most time teaching Kolten the game and the importance of working out, which he emphasized on a daily basis.

B. J. Penn, a mixed martial artist, and Ultimate Fighting Championship star befriended Kolten Wong, whose father, Jay Dee Penn, befriended Kaha Wong.

The Penns had a facility where Kaha Wong could teach kids how to swing a bat. Kolten’s Chinese ancestors were his paternal great-grandparents.

He grew up rooting for the Atlanta Braves. Wong spent two hours a day cutting trees with an ax to build his strength and daily sessions in a batting cage to prepare for baseball.

In Aberdeen, Maryland, he competed in the Cal Ripken World Series and led his team, Pacific Southwest, to victory.
