The Athletics’ roster didn’t receive many major league additions this offseason. In fact, they began the process of rebuilding by moving away a number of their important players.

However, Oakland did recruit one player who is well-known to baseball fans in the Bay Area: veteran catcher Stephen Vogt.

The 37-year-old Vogt played for the A’s for four seasons (2013–17) and twice was selected to the All-Star squad. In 2019, he also played for the Giants.

Following his World Series victory with the Atlanta Braves last year, Vogt made the decision to return for a tenth season to the league where he first found success. Vogt stated to reporters on Friday in Arizona that returning to Oakland for this season was a “dream come true,” despite the A’s roster turnover.

Last season, Vogt played for the Braves and Arizona Diamondbacks at various times, batting.195 with seven home runs and 25 RBI overall. He earned a World Series ring, but his injury early in September prevented him from helping the Braves’ postseason run.

Vogt’s playing time will be restricted this time around in Oakland because Sean Murphy has been designated as the team’s starting catcher. According to Vogt, he considered retiring with a championship ring but eventually concluded that he still had more to give.
