Shortstop in the year 2021 The Philadelphia Phillies certainly did not sign up for Didi Gregorius. Gregorius’ game took a step back in every way.
He was once again afflicted by an elbow injury, on top of his on-field struggles.
After returning to Philadelphia in January 2021 on a two-year, $28 million deal, the idea was that Gregorius would bridge the gap at shortstop between himself and Baseball Prospectus’ #67 overall prospect Bryson Stott.
That timing has been pushed up due to Gregorius’ troubles and Stott’s success in the minors and Arizona Fall League.
Dave Dombrowski, President of Baseball Operations, even advised Stott to come into camp ready to earn the job.
