Diego Castillo (born January 18, 1994) is a Major League Baseball pitcher for the Seattle Mariners of the Dominican Republic (MLB). He formerly played for the Tampa Bay Rays in Major League Baseball.
On June 6, 2018, Castillo was promoted to the Tampa Bay Rays and made his debut. He spent the season pitching out of the bullpen and as one of the Rays’ “opening” starters.
Castillo was 4–2 in 11 starts and threw 56+23 innings in 43 games. He had a 3.18 ERA, 65 strikeouts, and 18 walks throughout the course of the season.
Castillo was employed as a closer and opener in 2019. He was placed on the 10-day injured list with shoulder inflation on June 23. He appeared in 65 games throughout the season (6 starts).
He had 81 strikeouts, 8 saves, and a 3.41 ERA in 68+23 innings. Castillo pitched two shutout innings in the American League Wild Card game against the Oakland Athletics.
In the American League Division Series, he pitched 3+23 innings in three games (one start) as the Rays fell to the Houston Astros in five games.
Castillo was demoted from the opening post in 2020. He took paternity leave on July 24. Castillo has four saves in 22 games and a 1.66 ERA with 23 strikeouts and 11 walks. When the Rays were leading in the postseason, he was frequently deployed in the late innings.
After Mike Brosseau’s eighth-inning home run, he threw the last two innings of Game 5 of the ALDS against the New York Yankees, earning the win.
Castillo participated in seven games in the American League Championship Series against the Astros, going 1–0 with two saves and two holds. In Game 6, he gave up his first run.
The Rays traded Castillo to the Seattle Mariners for J. T. Chargois and Austin Shenton on July 29, 2021.
