Who is Dominic Smith?

Dominic David Rene Smith is a Major League Baseball (MLB) first baseman and left fielder for the New York Mets.

He was drafted 11th overall by the Mets in the 2013 MLB draft out of Gardena, California’s Junpero Serra High School, and made his MLB debut in 2017.

In his youth, Smith took part in Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities and the Major League Baseball Urban Youth Academy.

He was a member of the baseball team at Junpero Serra High School in Gardena, California, where he played first base, outfield, and pitcher.

In 2013, he led the Cavaliers to the Southern Section division championship of the California Interscholastic Federation.

Smith has signed a letter of intent to attend the University of Southern California (USC)

Smith was taken eleventh overall in the first round of the 2013 Major League Baseball draft by the Mets. Rather than attend USC, he received a $2.6 million signing bonus with the Mets.

Smith was sent to the Gulf Coast Mets of the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League (GCL), where he batted.287 in 48 games with three home runs and 22 RBIs.

He was then moved to the Rookie-level Appalachian League’s Kingsport Mets, where he hit four doubles in six at-bats.

Baseball America ranked Smith as the fourth-best prospect in the GCL for the 2013 season at the end of the season.

The Savannah Sand Gnats of the Class A South Atlantic League was his home for the whole 2014 season. Smith fell far short of expectations, with only one home run, 44 RBIs, and 77 strikeouts in 461 at-bats.

In 2015, Smith struggled mightily with the Class A-Advanced St. Lucie Mets of the Florida State League (FSL).

One double in his first sixteen games and zero hits at the beginning of May were his only stats for the month.

In a game against the Tampa Yankees on May 12, Smith hit his first extra-base hit since Opening Day, with a double.

Smith’s batting average rose to .260 after a 16-game hitting streak during which he went 3-for-5 with a run batted in.

Smith had a .352 batting average, 38 hits, and 51 total bases in June, good for first in the FSL. He finished second in the league in runs batted in (20) and fifth in runs scored (15), earning him the title of Florida State League Player of the Month.

Smith finished the season with a slash line of .305/.354/.417 and a career-best of six home runs, continuing his strong hitting.

In addition to 79 RBIs and 33 doubles, he was voted FSL Player of the Year for his stellar season. After the season ended, he played in the Arizona Fall League for the Salt River Rafters.
