Dominic Smith was a member of Reviving Baseball in the Inner Cities and the Major League Baseball Urban Youth Academy when he was younger.
He went to Junpero Serra High School in Gardena, California, and played first base, outfield, and pitcher for the school’s baseball team. In 2013, he guided the Cavaliers to the California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section division title.
Smith has made the decision to attend the University of Southern California (USC). After Fernando Salas was designated for assignment, the Mets promoted Smith to the major leagues on August 11, 2017.
He made his debut that night at Citizens Bank Park against the Philadelphia Phillies, getting a single for his first hit off of Nick Pivetta. On August 15, Smith hit his first home run against Sonny Gray. For the Mets, he finished the 2017 season with a.198 batting average and nine home runs in 167 at-bats.
Smith was scheduled to compete with Adrián González for the Mets’ starting first baseman in 2018, however, he missed much of spring training due to a quadriceps injury.
He began the season with Las Vegas and was elevated on May 11 after Jay Bruce went on the paternity list before being relegated on May 14 when Bruce returned.
Smith was sent to the minor leagues on June 11 after the Mets dismissed Adrián González. On July 20, Smith was demoted again after Yoenis Céspedes was activated off the injured list.
