Donny Sands plays catcher for the Philadelphia Phillies of Major League Baseball.
Sands was born and raised in Tucson, Arizona, where he attended school until third grade.
He worked as a batboy for the New Mexico Lobos baseball team after his family relocated to Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Sands returned to Tucson with his mother when his father died in 2012. Before transferring to Salpointe Catholic High School, he attended Empire High School for two years.
The New York Yankees picked Sands in the eighth round of the 2015 Major League Baseball draft, with the 243rd overall selection.
Sands signed with the Yankees despite having committed to the University of New Mexico. He received a $100,000 signing bonus.
With the Gulf Coast Yankees, he made his professional debut. Sands was moved from third base to catcher after his first season with the Yankees.
He was a member of the Charleston RiverDogs in 2017.
He started the 2021 season with the Somerset Patriots before being promoted to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders halfway through the year.
