Donny Sands plays catcher for the Philadelphia Phillies of Major League Baseball.

Sands was born and raised in Tucson, Arizona, where he attended school until third grade.

He was a batboy for the New Mexico Lobos baseball team after his family relocated to Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Sands returned to Tucson with his mother after his father died in 2012. Before transferring to Salpointe Catholic High School, he went to Empire High School for two years.

The New York Yankees selected Sands in the eighth round of the 2015 Major League Baseball draft, with the 243rd overall selection.

Sands signed with the Yankees despite having committed to the University of New Mexico. He received a $100,000 signing bonus. With the Gulf Coast Yankees, he made his major-league debut.

Sands was moved from third base to catcher by the Yankees following his rookie season. In 2017, he was a member of the Charleston RiverDogs, a minor league baseball team in South Carolina.

He started the 2021 season with the Somerset Patriots before being traded to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders halfway through the season. After the season, Sands was added to the Yankees’ 40-man roster.

Sands and Nick Nelson were traded to the Philadelphia Phillies on November 19, 2021, in exchange for T. J. Rumfield and Joel Valdez.
