Sands and his mother returned to Tucson after his father died in 2012. He spent two years at Empire High School before transferring to Salpointe Catholic High School.



The New York Yankees picked Sands in the eighth round of the 2015 Major League Baseball draft, with the 243rd overall pick.

Sands signed with the Yankees despite having committed to the University of New Mexico and received a $100,000 signing bonus. With the Gulf Coast Yankees, he made his professional debut.

Sands was moved from third base to catcher after his first season with the Yankees.

He was a member of the Charleston RiverDogs in 2017.
