The Pittsburgh Pirates’ MLB roster saw a lot of changes during the summer. Duane Underwood Jr., a right-handed bullpen pitcher, was one of the newcomers to the roster.

The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired Underwood Jr. in a deal with the Chicago Cubs in early March.

Underwood Jr. was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates less than a week after he was designated for assignment by the Chicago Cubs.

Despite the fact that Underwood Jr. struggled at times with the Cubs, the Cubs’ decision to DFA him was surprising given his high upside and excellent pitches.

So far, Underwood Jr. has made the Cubs seem foolish for allowing him to escape. In 9.1 innings pitched with the Pirates, the 26-year-old righty has a 2.89 ERA and 1.91 FIP.

In 9.1 innings thrown, Underwood Jr. has not allowed a home run, walked 10.3 percent of hitters faced, and struck out 33.3 percent.

Underwood Jr. has shown he can pitch in a variety of roles out of the Pirate bullpen. He has pitched many innings for the team as well as being effective in a single inning appearance.

When you combine his accomplishment with his plus stuff and the fact that he’ll be under team control until 2025, Underwood Jr. could be on his way to becoming a key component of the future Pirate core.

A three-pitch mix with three plus pitches has fueled Underwood Jr.’s success this season. His four-seam fastball, changeup, and curveball are his three pitches.

Derek Shelton has converted Underwood Jr. into a weapon out of the bullpen thanks to his three-pitch mix.
