Garneau was drafted in the 19th round of the 2009 Major League Baseball draft by the Colorado Rockies. Garneau made his professional debut with the Casper Ghosts at the rookie level, where he hit .250 in 23 games.

Garneau divided his 2010 season between the Low-A Tri-City Dust Devils and the High-A Modesto Nuts, batting .243/.346/.405 with three home runs and 34 RBI.



In 100 games with the Single-A Asheville Tourists in 2011, he slashed .255/.370/.513 with career highs in home homers (17) and RBI (67).

Garneau returned to Modesto in 2012, hitting .243/.332/.383 with six home runs and 29 RBI. Garneau spent the following season with the Double-A Tulsa Drillers, hitting .236/.313/.414 with 13 home runs and 47 RBI in 96 games.

The next year, he returned to Tulsa and split the season with the Triple-A Colorado Springs Sky Sox, hitting .240/.327/.395 with seven home runs and 42 RBI.

To begin the 2015 season, Garneau was assigned to the Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes.

Garneau was called up to the majors for the first time on August 19, 2015, when he was named to the 40-man roster.

The next day, he made his Major League Baseball debut as the starting catcher against the Washington Nationals, and he got his first professional hit, a double-off Nationals starter Max Scherzer.

Garneau batted .157/.224/.286 in 22 major league games as a rookie, with two home runs and eight RBI.

In 24 games with the Rockies, Garneau hit .235/.293/.368 with one home run and six RBI. In 2017, Garneau appeared in 22 games with Colorado, batting.206/.260/.353 with one home run and six RBI.
