Coleman went to Potosi High School, which is located in Potosi, Missouri. He went to Missouri State University to play collegiate baseball for the Bears after going undrafted out of high school in 2015.



In 2017, he was a member of the Cape Cod League’s Bourne Braves. In 2018, Coleman had his greatest collegiate season, going 10–2 with a 3.77 ERA and 129 strikeouts in 102+23 innings.

Coleman was selected in the fourth round of the 2018 Major League Baseball draft by the San Diego Padres.

Coleman pitched for the Tri-City Dust Devils and the Fort Wayne TinCaps in his professional debut season of 2018, going 12–2 with a 3.18 ERA and 29 strikeouts in 22+23 innings.

Coleman pitched for the AZL Padres, the Fort Wayne Forty-Niners, and the Lake Elsinore Storm in 2019, going 4–3 with a 3.18 ERA and 39 strikeouts in 34 innings.

Coleman did not play in 2020 because the Minor League Baseball season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Coleman was traded to the Kansas City Royals as a player to be named later on November 5, 2020, as part of a trade that saw Trevor Rosenthal go to San Diego and Edward Olivares go to Kansas City.

Coleman pitched for the Northwest Arkansas Naturals and the Omaha Storm Chasers in the minor leagues in 2021, going 5–1 with a 3.28 ERA and 93 strikeouts in 57+23 innings.

Coleman’s contract was selected to the active roster by Kansas City on September 21, 2021, and he made his MLB debut that night against the Cleveland Indians.
